We strive to be inclusive of all genders in our choir.  We avoid assigning gender to each section (e.g. "Ladies" or "Men") and instead simply use Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone/Bass to refer to each group of singers.  Hormones affect vocal ranges, so these are broad categories, and may shift throughout a person's life and depending on hormonal influences.    We haven't yet found a completely neutral way to describe vocal cords and vocal ranges, and so far this is our best attempt to be clear and inclusive at the same time.

Soprano - highest vocal range for people with female vocal cords

Alto - middle vocal range for people with female vocal cords

Tenor - a blend of voices: typically, highest vocal range for people with male vocal cords, and can also include the lowest vocal range for people with female vocal cords

Baritone - middle vocal range for people with male vocal cords

Bass - lowest vocal range for people with male vocal cords
